hands deep in rich, dark soil offers a grounding experience that modern life often lacks. This year, our school allotment garden came alive with laughter, teamwork and a shared sense of purpose as we kicked off our weekly Diggin’ Dads initiative.
“Plant, grow and explore the full growing journey together!”
The concept behind Diggin’ Dads is beautifully simple: invite dads, grandads and male role models to step into the school garden alongside their children. It is an opportunity to slow down, share skills, and bond over the slow, rewarding process of cultivation. From the very first session, the energy in the allotment has been nothing short of inspiring.
Hands-On Learning and Shared Moments
Equipped with hand trowels and a shared curiosity, our families wasted no time getting to work. Under the gentle guidance of the school team, the children and their dads have been preparing raised beds, clearing weeds, and carefully planting out a variety of crops.
Recent sessions have shown our young growers working side-by-side with their dads to plant out vibrant green sweetcorn seedlings and tender young strawberry plants. Kneeling together in the dirt, these moments aren’t just about teaching children where their food comes from—they are about building lasting memories, fostering communication and enjoying the simple pleasure of each other’s company outdoors..

The Diggin’ Dads program is a continuous, rewarding journey through the seasons. As the weeks progress, our families will watch these tiny seedlings grow into a bountiful harvest, experiencing the full cycle of growth from root to table.
We invite all dads, grandads, and male guardians to join us at the allotment. It is entirely free to participate and absolutely no prior experience or equipment is required—we supply all the seeds, plants and tools you need to get stuck in! These sessions are 2:00pm – 3:00pm on a Wednesday – speak to Mrs Thompson to find out more.
